Berlin, 1 December 2023. Storengy Deutschland reaffirms its commitment to reduce annual methane emissions to 35% by 2025. The leading gas storage operator has been assigned with the Gold Standard of the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) the third year in a row. The observatory was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with support from the European Union. IMEO’s objective is to drive action on reducing methane emissions.

The IMEO report includes the analysis of the first reports submitted by the company members of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0). IMEO will improve the reporting accuracy and public transparency of human-caused methane emissions. Initially, it will focus on methane emissions from the fossil fuel sector, and then expand to other major emitting sectors like agriculture and waste. The Gold Standard is awarded to companies that have submitted serious and detailed implementation plans on how they can achieve their ambitious targets by 2025.

Storengy Deutschland has taken a number of measures to reduce methane emissions. This means that the company already achieved its 2025 target in the 2022 reporting year and reached a level 4 for reporting in accordance with OGMP.

  1. For example, Storengy has investigated the use of gas leakage compressors to prevent potential gas leaks at the Harsefeld and Lesum natural gas storage facilities. Commissioning of the compressors and thus a significant reduction in emissions is planned from the beginning of 2024 respectively.
  2. To reduce emissions during maintenance work, Storengy uses a mobile hot flare to minimise gas venting during the main maintenance work. Since the beginning of 2023, this has saved around 1,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
  3. Storengy has made progress in the assessment of fugitive emissions by inspecting all six natural gas storage facilities in Germany with an infrared camera and a flame ionisation detector (FID) in accordance with the EN 15 446 standard.
