Fuel for the future: Green hydrogen for heavy-duty transport

Berlin, 30 November 2021. Storengy Deutschland is launching its hydrogen solution for the CO₂-neutral operation of heavy-duty vehicles in waste management and public transport. The company is therefore making an important contribution to decarbonising the mobility sector.

As a subsidiary of the ENGIE Group, a global leader in the energy sector, Storengy Deutschland is committed to the energy transition and thus to accompanying its customers towards climate neutrality. In association with the ENGIE Group, the entire lifecycle of hydrogen projects can be covered from a single source: not just as an investor but starting from the conceptual design and feasibility studies and extending to the detailed design, application for subsidies, turnkey construction and subsequent operation.

Reducing emissions in waste management
Especially in waste logistics, vast amounts of energy are consumed when collecting, disposing of and recycling waste, which releases considerable emissions. The hydrogen-powered solution has been conceived as part of an efficient cycle that starts with: (1) generating renewable electricity at the waste-to-energy plant, (2) converting the renewable electricity into hydrogen using electrolysis, (3) refuelling refuse collection vehicles with hydrogen and, (4) transporting the waste in the refuse collection vehicles to the incineration plant.

“Switching to hydrogen means investing in future-proof technology that enables refuse collection vehicles to be powered in an environmentally friendly, reliable and economical manner. Especially when it comes to the quality of life in local communities, using hydrogen means less particulate matter, CO₂ and noise,” says Daniel Mercer, Division Manager Business Development at Storengy Deutschland.

Investment, contracting and comprehensive project support
Storengy Deutschland is looking to further expand its hydrogen activities in the German market and is interested in owning and operating the necessary plant facilities – both as a whole and as a partner. The company is therefore offering investments and services aimed at developing a green H₂ infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles: ranging from consulting and planning to the construction and operation of the plants, and from the hydrogen production to its transport and storage in gas storage facilities. “We’re supporting our customers in moving risk-free into a CO₂-neutral future by bearing the investment costs for the entire H₂ infrastructure within a contracting model: both for the electrolysers producing the hydrogen and the filling stations providing refuelling services for interested customers,” says Daniel Mercer.

Contributing to Germany’s hydrogen economy
In addition to the hydrogen solution for heavy-duty transport, Storengy Deutschland is delivering a number of other H₂ projects together with the ENGIE Group. These include the “SaltHy” project for storing green hydrogen in existing natural gas storage facilities. In northern Germany, green hydrogen shall be stored in the salt caverns at the Harsefeld natural gas storage facility near Stade and transported via pipelines, trains or trailers to local customers in the mobility and industry sectors. This project will enable green hydrogen to be produced, stored and transported on an industrial scale if suitable funding is secured at the European level. The cavern will not only be able to adapt to intermittent hydrogen producers and consumers but also serve as a seasonal storage facility. This will make an important contribution to creating a European H₂ backbone and to establishing Germany as a leading hydrogen centre.
